Major Mideast War Averted

Major Mideast War Averted

For Now

You may not have realized it, but the world came close to the outbreak of war over the weekend when Iran's Hezbollah terrorist army began firing Katyusha rockets into Northern Israel on Sunday. That action prompted a sharp Israeli reponse that included air strikes and artillery bombardments as well as air raid alerts and threats of Israeli retaliation by bombing Lebanon's capital city, Beirut.

Despite all of this action, mainstream media here in the United States barely mentioned any of this activity that lasted for several tense hours that threatened to mushroom into full-scale conflict.

It had all the earmarks of escalating into a sudden, "hot" war. Events began to escalate nearly out of control before the diplomats could get things calmed down. Had it not stopped, things would likely have escalated into drawing in the Syrians and perhaps even the Iranians themselvse. As it was, the Iranian proxy group, Hezbollah became heavily engaged with Israeli forces. Below are various news stories providing coverage on the events.

Rocket Attack Strikes Israel

Hezbollah launched a rocket attack against a northern Israeli defense base. The action prompted air raid alerts and Israeli counter-airstrikes against two terrorist bases.

The Israeli counter-response triggered Hezbollah guerilla action against local Jewish communities near the northern border with Lebanon. That action included a mortar bombardment and an exchange of small arms fire. That triggered both airstrikes and Israeli artillery fire. The actions lasted several hours and was halted only after UN peacekeppers brokered a cease-fire. More details here. More details here from The Jordan Times.

Israel Threatened To Bomb Beirut

Prior to that Ceasefire agreement, Israel had warned the Lebanese government that it was going to bomb the Lebanese capital of Beirut. That prompted a flurry of diplomatic actions by the US and the UN. Details here.

Israel Warns Hezbollah Against More Attacks

Lebanon and Hizbullah will pay a "heavy price," senior IDF officers warned Monday, if the Iranian-funded group fails to learn its lesson from Israel's massive retaliatory strike on Sunday and launches additional attacks against northern Israel.

"We hope the message from our response [on Sunday] was understood correctly by the other side [Hizbullah]," Commander of the Galilee Division Brig.-Gen. Gal Hirsch told reporters on Monday as a tense quiet prevailed in the north after rockets flew over both sides of the border on Sunday. More Details here.
