How Clinton will save America's reputation

How Clinton will save America's reputation

Well, now we know what Bill Clinton's job is going to be when his wife is sworn in to office as the first woman president of the United States.

He tells the London Guardian – for those unfamiliar with this newspaper, a foreign-owned, foreign-circulated one – his wife has already assigned him the task of restoring America's tarnished image in the world.

As he put it, not so delicately in this interview on foreign soil, she has asked him to "go out and immediately restore America's standing, go out and tell people America was open for business and cooperation again" after eight years marked by unilateralist policies that have "enrage[d] the world."

Now, let's pause there for a moment or two of analysis and translation.

When one of the Clintons goes out of the country and proclaims that America is open for business, again, what that means to me is that Chinese government campaign contributions to the Hillary re-election fund are welcome.

But I'm trying to figure out which are the unilateralist policies that have enraged the world. I'm tempted to believe that would be the invasion of Iraq – the one specifically authorized by the United Nations, participated in by dozens of allies and approved wholeheartedly by Hillary Rodham Clinton as a voting U.S. senator.

Do I have that about right?

Now, if there is some other unilateralist policy to which the Clintons are referring, I would love to be enlightened. All you "MoveOn(dot)Dems" out there are welcome to send in your suggestions of which policies those might be.

One other policy apparently mentioned in the interview is "climate change." Perhaps that is one of the unilateralist U.S. policies that has "enraged the world." Actually, though, he's got an ally in this White House on global warming. George W. Bush believes in it. What exactly, I wonder, do the MoveOn(dot)Dems want Bush to do that he hasn't done?

Hillary Rodham Clinton hasn't won a single primary yet, but already, Bill Clinton has his assignment – his appointment, his job in the new administration.

And, apparently, he's begun it already. He isn't even waiting until he has a formal portfolio to go out across the world and spread venom about his own country's policies – even when his party has undisputed control of both houses of Congress!

It's truly amazing.

He has, apparently, learned his diplomatic approach in the Jimmy Carter school of America-bashing.

What is it with former U.S. presidents trashing their own country and their own president on foreign soil? This isn't campaigning for votes. Brits can't vote in American elections. And there's a reason for that. America is for Americans. It is Americans only who decide which politician gets elected. Trashing political opponents abroad is not only the height of bad manners and poor diplomacy, it is un-American, undignified and actually materially weakens our position in the world, making it more difficult for the incumbent, with about 16 months left in office, to create any new foreign initiatives.

But the Clintons don't care about that.

They care only about themselves – their own power, their own standing, their own images.

Why is it that 49 percent of Americans can't see this as clearly as I can?

How is it that these charlatans fool that many people?

Or are all those millions of voters complicit in the despicable and transparent charade?

I don't know if I will be able to maintain my sanity if these narcissists actually do return to power. But I know for certain I will never be short of material to write about.
