Pentagon Secretly Preps For War With Iran?

(AO Newswire) -- It's been a crazy year so far, in terms of tracking what is going on behind the scenes in the Iranian nuclear crisis. Rumors and rumors of war abound in Washington, D.C. amid social gatherings in particular. Of course, Washington has always been a town for rumor mills. Our sources provide mixed signals at times as to which direction things will move regarding the Iranian nuclear crisis. Conflicting stories are emerging now as to how the situation will be resolved.

According to some Israeli reports, the Israeli leadership has become more pessimistic in its hopes that America will take military action to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapons production capability. At the same time, top Israeli officials publicly insist that Israel simply can not afford to take military action against Iran as it did with Saddam Hussein's nuclear facility nearly 25 years ago. Yet, despite such public statements, some Israeli military leaders are indicating a readiness and even ability to resolve the issue.

American diplomatic and military sources however state both publicly and privately that an Israeli action against Iran might well be disastrous and lead to a World War between Islam and Western nations.

Meanwhile, President Bush is losing political capital and public support for just about anything. The President's popularity continues to slip precipitously. There is fear behind closed doors that the Spygate scandal is about to engulf the White House with a possible indictment of Bush's top political consultant, Karl Rove. It might not even stop at Rove. The Vice President may eventually be dragged into the matter as well. In other words, Bush & Company are just about to the point that if the scandal develops further, it will be time to "circle the wagons." Some veteran pundits however, might suggest that such a situation would be an opportune time for a "wag-the-dog" scenario, whereby an incident is mushroomed out as an excuse that takes away the focus of scandal onto a war like situation.

Noted investigative journalist, Will Thomas has recently written that indeed the "neo-con" group within the Administration is looking out for any kind of incident like the "Gulf of Tonkin" event that enabled President Lyndon Johnson to send a massive military buildup to South Vietnam.

Thomas also notes that the Spanish-American war was started with a dubious incident in which the Battleship Maine mysteriously blew up in Cuban waters. The Spanish were blamed for sabotage although later it was found that the Spanish had nothing to do with the explosion. Of course, American leadership didn't bother with the facts. It became an excuse to go to war with Spain.

Ditto then applies also for Pearl Harbor. Years after the fact, the public discovers that President Roosevelt and his top advisors knew in advance that Japan was going to launch a sneak attack on Pearl and did nothing to stop it, because FDR wanted an excuse to go to war to aid Britain. "Remember Pearl Harbor" became a rallying cry.

Let's not forget 9-11. It triggered two invasions, one against Afghanistan and the other against Iraq.

So, there is precedent that Bush could follow up with. IF, Iran would just cooperate and "do" something stupid, like launch a terror strike against the U.S. or accidentally (or not so accidentally) attack a US naval ship, or oil tanker in the Persian Gulf. Bush's advisors think that if only there were some suprise event that could be used as an excuse for immediate war, the need for following slow, diplomatic efforts would be made null and void.

Ironically, Bush may get his wish. We've just published a related article on A-O that raises the possibility that perhaps Iran's leadership is sending signals that it might just launch an attack first and not wait for diplomacy to fail in a way that would allow America to launch a pre-emptive strike. After all, we've just found out that Iran's new president has been heard telling supporters that history will end within two to three years and the Islamic Messiah will arrive, thanks in large measure to the Iranian president's policies. It is as if, Iran's leaders have as much of a death wish as those crazy, suicide bombers.

One aspect in all of this that is sometimes lost, but Thomas made note of, is the fact that America really hasn't been ready to "act" militarily against Iran. The U.S. needed to make more cruise missiles and develop ordinance that could better destroy Iran's underground facilities. It takes time to manufacture more missiles. Much of the U.S. inventory of cruise missiles was depleted during Gulf War 2 with Iraq. Forces also need to be rested and tested. Assets need to be re-deployed.

Thomas notes that the Pentagon has been quietly doing just that since early this year. In fact, Thomas' article goes into great detail on just how the Pentagon is tap-dancing its way publicly around the issue so as to keep its cards close to its chest.

Thomas notes in his article that in January, the Pentagon cancelled ALL leaves from January to September were either cancelled or expedited for "HOT" action between those time frames. He goes into great detail as to how the Pentagon went about keeping the preparations for Iran secret from the junior officers. Most assumed that the Pentagon was planning some reinforcements to Iraq. It wasn't until the last few weeks that the realization finally struck home to these junior officers that the preparations for desert warfare was not to be for Iraq but rather for Iran.

Thomas noted that a near revolt has developed within the officer corp of the United States military. For example, civilian leadership is thinking of sending troops into mountainous terrain with tanks that can't go up to the summits because the mountains are simply too big. Infantry units wihout armored support would likely be butchered by Iranian's who know the terrain and use guerilla warfare tactics. Pentagon ground officers realized that it would be nearly suicidal to conduct such operations. Yet, the tanks, as we speak are rolling into position for transport to the Theater of Operations.

It was thought that there would be no need for ground troops to be used in Iran, but Thomas indicates that the Bush Administration's "neo-cons" have other ideas.

Here's an excerpt from Will Thomas's article:

"As Pulitzer-winning journalist Seymour Hersh has confirmed, the generals performed their sworn duty by rendering their professional opinion to the National Command Authority, to wit: “You’re out of your frickin’ minds.” [Democracy Now! Apr 12/06; New Yorker Apr 17/06]

"US commanders pointed out that their tanks were not going to be taking any scenic drives through Persian peaks exceeding 7,000 feet, and occasionally topping out over 10,000. The missing oxygen required to sustain life would also not be enough to sustain heavy-lift helos attempting to chopper in all those bullets and beans well above their rated service ceilings.

“Bad idea,” they said. The Soviet Red Army had conclusively and catastrophically demonstrated what happens when troops attempting to assault unfamiliar mountain defiles without armor and adequate air support confront homeland defenders armed with anti-air and anti-vehicle rockets fighting from good cover. Especially when said shooters are not afraid to die.

“We can’t do this,” the generals told Rumsfeld and his amateur warmakers. “Your plan will not work. Most of our people will get killed.”

We'll stop there - but realize that Thomas is just getting warmed up at this point in his article. He continues on, at-length with more dialogue on other aspects of a ground campaign and before you're finished, you'll really be shaking your head wondering how civilian "morons" could be calling the shots of what could easily become World War 3.

Thomas also points out, that another tactic being contemplated is B-52's:

“carpet bombing” Iranian cities and countryside—just like they’d done to Vietnam, Cambodia and Basra. Deeply buried nuclear research facilities would be used to “field test” experimental nuclear “bunker-busters”.

Nevertheless, according to my highly placed source, whose record of accurate inside information spans 15 years of our collaboration—and corroborated by Seymour Hersh—by March 2006 Pentagon war-gamers had drawn up “follow on” blueprints for non-democratic regime change in Iran.

Thomas also describes the discussions with the President about the use of nuclear weapons and the fact that - if nukes are used - Iran's oil fields will be forever lost to the world because of radiation poisoning. Thomas reports that Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld didn't believe the top nuclear experts in the world. Apparently, just as with Iraq's WMDs, Bush and Rumsfeld don't want to believe that Iran's oil reserves could become radioactive forever.

Thomas goes on to explain why Vice President Cheney made those nasty remarks about Russia and democracy that started a firestorm of insults between Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and her Russian counterpart nearly 2 weeks ago at a private meeting and diplomatic dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Astonishingly, Thomas goes on to describe a near-mutiny by military commanders:

In April 2006 Bush choppered in to meet his commanders in the field. But the Commander-In-Chief’s personal intervention failed to elicit assurances that his senior officers would obey what some were quietly calling an “illegal” order to attack Iran.

Unwilling to risk certain mutiny—and still without informing Congress or the American public—the two-man National Command Authority backed down from issuing 3rd Phase deployment/attack orders for the invasion of Iran.

This is simply an amazing story, if true.

Thomas closes his article with potential, triggering scenarios that might provide the excuse that Bush is looking for.

We highly recommend that you read the full article by Will Thomas at least once and maybe more. Here is a link.

Our thoughts on this article race towards our understanding of the Biblical Prophecies pertaining to America as Mystery Babylon. It would seem to us that Bush is racing America towards the "Perfect Storm" of Divine Judgment #1 on "America, The Babylon." A judgment for which utter destruction of not just America's military forces in the Persian Gulf might occur, but also of supernatural judgment by angelic forces on the Continental United States, preceded by Revelation 18:4 "Come up out of her My People, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive none of her plagues," Indeed, the rapture of the Church out of this mess, cannot come soon enough.
