Israel on the Brink of a New War?

Israel on the Brink of a New War?

Israel Pounded By Hamas Rockets

Barrage Against 2 Israeli Cities

20 Rockets Injure 30 People

Schools in Sderot and Shear Hanegreve were forced to close after the latest round of rockets struck around the towns of Sderot and S. Ashkelon in southern Israel. The situation is reportedly very tense.

While the rockets were reportedly fired by Hamas, Debka reports that the Fatah Palestinians have joined in the effort. Debka repots that Israeli leaders have chosen for the moment to refrain from large-scale military action.

The latest rocket barrage on Sderot is the worst attack ever on that city. Israelis are considering whether or not to order a total evacuation of the town to prevent further injuries. At the moment, women and children were being evacuated to shelters in nearby areas out of range of the rockets.

The rocket attacks come even as Hamas battles Palestinian Auhtority Chairman's Presidential Guard unit of Hamas amidst an ongoing struggle for control of the Palestinian government. Debka reports on damages. LINK. Jerusalem Post coverage. LINK.

Rocket Strikes Defense Minister's Next Door Neighbor's Home

One of the rockets in the Tuesday night, Wednesday morning barrage struck the Sderot home that stood next door to the home of Israel's Defense Minister Peretz. Peretz was not at home when the rocket struck his next door neighbor's house, but it is bound to have triggered reverberations throughout the Israeli Defense Ministry. No one was reported to be injured in that particular blast.

The Defense Minister did respond, calling the attack "intolerable and will reap a response." Peretz added that "Israel has no intention to intervene with the internal clashes in [Gaza] Strip but we are not going to tolerate that these clashes will impact the security of Israeli residents, these events will reap a suitable response."

IAF helicopters did respond later with attacks on suspected rocket locations in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Olmert government is expected to meet later in the day on Wednesday to consult on the growing rocket threats. Nearly 30 rockets have impacted on southern Israel in the past two days.

It is thought that Hamas is trying to provoke an Israeli attack so that Hamas and Fatah units will quit fighting each other and unite to fight against Israel. Both Hamas and Fatah are battling each other for control of the Palestinian government. More details here.
