SOMEONES IS SLEEPING IN MY BED & EATING MY PORRIDGE

On April 1, 2006 David M. Bresnahan wrote a tongue-in-cheek commentary on illegal immigration that received significant national attention and inspired a hit song. This is his follow-up to “Mr. President I’m Headed to Mexico.”

Dear Candidates for President,

My family and I need your help. We do not know what to do. Some people are breaking the law, but we cannot seem to find anyone willing to do anything about it.

My family and I were away for a while, and when we came home we discovered something that has us a bit concerned. We need your advice.

When we returned to our house we discovered there were several different families living in our home. We never met any of them before. They just showed up and decided to stay without asking our permission.

We tried to ask them to leave, but that made them angry. Apparently they were quick to make friends with some of our neighbors when they moved in, because when our neighbors found out we wanted these people to leave they told us we should be kind to them and let them stay.

We have always thought of ourselves as caring, concerned, compassionate people. However, in the past we have selected when and how to be of service to others, and how much money and to which cause we would donate our funds.

These uninvited guests want us to feed them, but they are unwilling to pay for anything. One of them is having a baby soon and would like us to pay the costs because they do not have insurance. They told us that they are entitled to healthcare simply because they are living in our house. They said that because they are in our house we are responsible for their well-being and their children’s education, and they require us to communicate with them in their native language.

Even though they have money to spend on themselves, they are unwilling to pay money towards the food they are eating, or to help with other expenses for running our home. They say they do not have to help us with cooking, cleaning the house, taking out the trash, or doing the laundry. They keep telling us that they expect us to do those things for them.

We asked the local police for help, but they said they are not authorized to do anything. We went to our elected officials, but apparently the people who moved into our house made friends with elected officials. The politicians do not want to upset them, so they are not getting involved.

We need your help. There are people here who are breaking the law and stealing from our family. What should we do? What will you do to stop this from happening?

Sincerely yours,

David M. Bresnahan
